January 15, 2016

Did you know that if you make the chicken think it’s daylight, even at night, they will lay eggs that are bigger and with harder shells? Yep, try it and let us know what happens.

Did you know that the India Blue Peafowl is the most popular variety of peafowl? Yep, we are guessing you had no idea, right?

Peafowl

And the coop for peafowl? It needs to be weather tight, free from drafts, and rodent proof. This coop can be a special house designed for birds of another house with a small penned off area. Make sure the brooder house is clean and disinfected a week or two before the birds arrive so it is clean and dry ahead of time. Are peafowl on your radar? If so, we’ve got you covered!

Did you know that hens do not need a rooster to lay eggs? A rooster fertilizes eggs, he is necessary to hatch baby chicks, but not to produce eggs. Do remember that roosters are like good husbands- they protect their women (the hens) and are first on the scene of any disturbance.

Here’s another fun fact- Did you know that the waste produced by just one chicken can supply enough electricity to run a hundred watt lightbulb for about five hours?  So, all of that waste is good for something, right?

And one more thing- Did you know that the most eggs laid by a chicken in one day is seven?
