It’s been about two months since we talked. I wanted to tell you that our Rangers are awesome. I’m sorry I only ordered the 15 of them.
We never lost one bird since they arrived. I butchered a couple myself two weeks ago just to see how they were doing at that age (9 weeks) and you are right: They were smaller than appeared and 11 to 12 weeks is prime. The rest has been finishing a lot of weight these last two weeks. We have a butcher set up for the rest of them a week from Monday.
I almost hate to butcher them because they are very gentle, a little clumsy but not from feet problems. I don’t have one that has leg or feet problems. They follow me around out there like I’m their mother. Healthiest meat chickens I have ever seen.
I started them outside with a little fence around them for a couple of weeks then at around 8 weeks opened the fence up and they hang out within about 30 or 40 feet of the fence. They like to be able to roam a little and are always at the coop come evening.
Also, I went ahead and baked one of the Rangers that I butchered and it was absolutely the best chicken any of us have had. And that says a lot coming from my Wife. We did 150 Cornish X’s last year and there is no comparison.
We’re getting close to relocating from Indiana to the Monroe, Michigan area and when we get settled, I’ll definitely be in touch. I’ll be spreading the word.
Thanks a bunch for the great birds and I mean it when I say that was the best chicken we ever had. I could easily eat that a couple of times a week.
